This was one of those projects that crop up once in a while and scream to all of my 'spooky' sensibilities. I was really pleased to be asked to shoot them as it presented an opportunity to be creative and try and break out of the studio. The Innocents is a stage adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw - a classic ghost story. As such, I wanted to avoid the 'white bg' set ups that have typified Barn promo images of late; I wanted something more atmospheric, that conveyed the unsettling nature of the play. These were shot on ,location around the theatre building. Each image had be to shot twice as there are two casts of young children. |
Thanks to Luke at Chaos City Comics for being the first victim to my natural light / location portraits.
Taking inspiration from one of my photographic heroes - Harry Borden - my aim is to shoot portraits of people in their 'environments', adopting an almost cinematic approach, framing in 16:9 ratio, and placing a heavy emphasis on natural / available light. Luke, one of my former students, was quick to answer the call for people who worked in interesting locations. His comic book store in St Albans was fabulous, with lots of display stuff to shoot through and iconic comic books to help fill the frame. Testing the auto focus update on the XT1 whilst out at Ashridge Estate. Harry was a suitable subject: fast and unpredictable. Got to say I was impressed with the tracking - a huge improvement.
